In a static field test no influence of adaptive interior lighting ABL (Antiblendlicht) on the visual performance could be found. In three extreme situations for the contrast sensitivity the threshold contrast with and without the use of ABL was nearly identical. A reduction of the contrast sensitivity using adaptive interior lighting could not be detected. Even the rating of discomfort glare was significantly reduced with using ABL. The arithmetic average on a scale from one (no glare) to seven (intolerable glare) decreased significantly from 4,1 without using ABL to 2,9 with using ABL. The results of the static field test could be confirmed in the driving experiment. In this second part of the study a significantly positive influence on the threshold contrast in form of increased recognition distance was found. Three positions of a test character were examined. The recognition distance of the test character 10 m in front of the glare source increased by 6,8 m (median) using ABL. For the test characters at the same height and 30 m behind the glare source no significant influence was determined. The reduction of discomfort glare using ABL pointed out in the static field test could be confirmed in another study in a driving simulator. So a positive influence of ABL on the glare rating could be confirmed in a following investigation.
