The mass market introduction of electric vehicles (EV) requires a close cooperation between the automotive industry, infrastructure provider and electric utilities. This paper examines possible scenarios for a charging infrastructure both from a technical and economical point of view. Potential business models including AC and DC charging concepts have been analyzed under the assumption that a positive business case is required for all stakeholders. In this context the customer point of view has been represented by a total cost of ownership model. A first indication on a potential build up of a charging infrastructure is given which will consist of the two important layers "charging at home (AC slow charging)" and "fast charging at public stations (AC or DC)" and eventually a third layer of a semi-public infrastructure available e.g. at parking garages or big retailer. However, a crucial key factor for success of the whole system "EV plus infrastructure plus additional services" will be the development of globally accepted infrastructure concepts and standards in order to reach economies of scale that deliver a positive business case for all involved stakeholders.
