This paper presents an integrated numerical approach to take best possible advantage of the common development tools at hand (3D and 1D) to determine the cooling air mass flow in the early vehicle development stages. 1D tools can be used early in development when neither 3D data nor wind tunnel models with detailed underhood flow are available. A problem that has to be resolved is the dependency on input data. In particular, the pressure loss data of single components are of great importance since the amount of cooling airflow is directly linked to these variables. At this, CFD can be used to gain a deeper insight in the local flow topology at the different components. That knowledge can be used to build 1D models that can cope with the posed tasks of not just calculating existing air paths but also to assess the influence of certain changes to the configuration itself. An example for such a complementary use of 3D and 1D tools and some selected results are presented and discussed for the Porsche 911 Carrera.
