With the significant improvements in vehicle electric and control systems as well as in automotive production technologies in the last 20 years, hybrid technology could have been developed for the mass market at first in Japan but later also in the USA, China and Europe. For the purposes of predicting the future development of hybrid technology some technology trends related to countries and applicants have been calculated based on the EPODOC database of the European Patent Office (EPO). This database contains currently more than 400 million patent and nonpatent literature documents from all over the world in over 100 daily updated databases to support the work of the EPO's patent examiners. For the calculation of hybrid technology trends only published patent documents and their publication dates have been considered. Furthermore, specific trends on first and second filing of patent applications, on particular hybrid architectures, on countries and on applicants are described. These trends indicate that not only European but also American, Korean and Chinese applicants have made up, step by step, an initial shortfall in Research & Development activities, especially for hybrid electric vehicles compared to Japanese applicants. Additionally the trends show also the successive changes in research, development and filing strategies from OEMs to TIER 1 suppliers worldwide. Furthermore, the calculated trends also confirm the enormous global growth of the field of hybrid vehicles and the large technical development in this field during the last 20 years.
