Zero emissions vehicles (ZEV's) are set to play an important role in the progression towards the low carbon vehicle transportation solutions that are required for a sustainable future. Due to higher population densities, this is of particular significance within cities, many of which are aiding the development and deployment of ZEV's through various means such as the introduction of electric vehicle recharging posts and hydrogen fuelling stations. To that end this paper discusses the development of a zero emission fuel cell hybrid electric powertrain and the integration into a conventional LTI TX4 London taxi. The fuel cell system comprises two PEM fuel cell stacks to produce a net power output of 30kW. The fuel cell stack technology utilises an evaporatively cooled technique whereby water is injected directly into the stack in order to satisfy both cooling and humidification requirements. In terms of the fuel cell hybrid taxi implementation, this has ensured that the powertrain could be installed within the TX4 application with no impact on the passenger or luggage space with minimal external visual differences when compared to the conventional diesel variant. The overall vehicle package is discussed along with preliminary test results obtained from an operational mule vehicle.
