Recently, some electric vehicles are being produced all over the world for economical reasons. In cases of developing electric vehicles, they have been developed by some automotive manufactures, some small companies and makers with using used-cars changed from gasoline engines to electric motors. Corresponding to expand to marketing of the electric vehicle, safety regulations are needed. In Japan, regulations regarding electric shock in accidents are issued to the electric vehicles. However, laws of safety regarding crashworthiness of the electric vehicles are not yet instituted. In this paper, the crashworthiness of the electric vehicle is reported when the vehicle has changed from gasoline engine to electric motor. As the crashworthiness is depended on the crushable length of the frame, each of them is comparable. As the length of electric motor is smaller than that of gasoline engine and crushable length of the frame of the electric vehicle extends, the crashworthiness of the electric vehicle is advantageous to the gasoline engine. On the other hand, for installing batteries in the lower position of the vehicle, the center of gravity are transited to the underneath area of the vehicle. It is presumed that the transfer of the center of gravity has the disadvantage in a crash because the buckling characteristic of the frames depends on the center of gravity. By using simple models, making vehicle models of the reverse engineering way and by using the Finite Element Method (FEM), the phenomena are validated. And also in case of frontal crushes, the compatibility between the electric vehicles and the popular vehicles is discussed.
