A pedestrian dummy FE model was developed and validated. The validation was carried out on both the component and full-scale levels. The validation results indicate that the FE dummy model is a good representative of the mechanical pedestrian dummy. There exists difference in the assessment of head injury risks by using the pedestrian dummy model and an EEVC (european enhanced vehicle safety committee) headform impactor. The FE dummy model is a useful tool for the design of pedestrian friendly vehicles in addition to EEVC pedestrian subsystem tests. An external airbag system was designed and a parameter study was carried out with the newly developed FE dummy model to investigate the influence of the airbag parameters on the protection performance of the airbag system. The results demonstrate that the airbag system can greatly reduce the head injury severity in pedestrian impacts. However, the protection performance can be influenced by the ignition timing and the presence of a vent hole on the airbag. The FE pedestrian dummy model can serve as the basis for further improvement of the biofidelity of the mechanical dummy. New modifications and improvements can first be tested on the FE dummy model, which is a more cost-effective and less time-consuming approach.
