It was shown that, using synergies between the fields of handling and driving performance and fuel consumption, a tire model and efficient method for parameter identification can be developed. Overlapping requirements and an easy-to-use modeling approach make that only few additional measurements guarantee a high level description of tire behavior and power losses. The presented approach and methods allow for the use of one single, comprehensive tire model for all applications in the field of simulation of driving performance and fuel consumption. Using a virtual tire test rig clear differences in efficiency between two tires with similar standardized rolling resistance coefficients were shown and an explanation in form of a first order approximation of tire power losses was given. It was shown, that the tire's slip-force characteristic and longitudinal slip stiffness in particular, play a key role in the power losses generated by the tire. Using the synergies of many years of experience in the field of vehicle handling simulation and simulation of performance and fuel consumption, an innovative and comprehensive approach to the entire process of tire modeling, specification of required measurements and identification of parameters has been developed. Different levels of detail were proposed, deduced from various goals of investigation. Not only the wellknown rolling resistance is described depending on current tire load an vehicle forward velocity, also power loss occurring due to longitudinal slip is presented in a 1st order approach. Moreover, the power loss due to tire toe angle following from suspension geometry or even tire sideslip angle according to vehicle cornering is described in the tire model. In addition to simulation of fuel consumption, the tire model is capable of accurately describing the longitudinal force characteristic and dynamics of the tire from low vehicle speeds up to the tire's speed index. This is of utmost importance for performance simulations, including acceleration and top speed. An efficient measurement program was developed, depending on requirements derived from the goal of the investigation, in order to identify the required parameters for the tire model.
