Advanced thermal management of the powertrain system can improve the powertrain efficiency, fuel economy etc. Modelling the powertrain thermal system is a necessary task before starting any optimization process, and the challenge comes from the lack of parameters that are required for the model. This paper introduces a new robust identification process that is able to estimate the parameters required for the thermal model, which take the nonlinearities of the thermal model into account. A 9 masses thermal model for the powertrain system was constructed and the unknown parameters of the model identified in the test bench measurements of the vehicle. The identification process is based on the hybridization of EA and SAA, which also takes the nonlinearities into account. In spite of the uncertainty of the measurements, the simulation results can be accepted. Further studies will be done to improve the accuracy of the thermal model in order to make it simulate the powertrain system more precisely. With the identified parameters of the model at hand, some optimization work was also done with the help of the MHEA. The optimization results show that it is possible to improve the fuel consumption and transmission efficiency through thermal system optimization.
