Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) are to provide safe and comfortable services for transportation. Using the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, VANET provides more flexible communication than mobile ad hoc network (MANET). It is a provision topic to provide a vehicle with mobility management, i.e., continuous connection when roaming between different roadsite units (RSUs). Mobile IP provides mobile nodes (MNs) with the ability of continuous data accessing from Internet. However, Mobile IP suffers from the long handover latency and needs to be modified to fit the VANET environment. In this paper, a fast handover control scheme using the extended beacon (FH-EB) approach is proposed to resolve the aforementioned issues. The proposed FH-EB control scheme has two functionalities: (1) extending the coverage range of RSUs, and (2) integrating the fast handover control scheme with vehicular communications.
