Through its research, physical oceanography tries to answer to the numerous problems stated by thermal, optical and dynamical properties of the ocean. This paper deals with the means used to determine these properties. After the definition of measured quantities and of quantities deducted by processing. it reviews some sensors and instruments used to provide to oceanographers useful parameters: temperature, salinity, pressure, speed and direction of sea currents, water height, state of the sea, turbidity and chemical-physical properties. It describes briefly some means employed for measurements at sea and other process under the development.
