After more than 10 years of extensive research in the field of solid-state hydrogen storage for mobile applications, the problem how to store hydrogen reversible on-board is still unsolved. Numerous new materials have been synthesized and their physical and chemical properties have been investigated in detail. Nevertheless, none of the materials considered as solidstate storage compounds does satisfy all the requirements for a hydrogen driven fuel cell car. A hydrogen storage tank for this application has to provide significant advantages compared to a 70 MPa gas storage tank. More important than the storage capacity of the material is the overall performance of the entire tank system and the system integration into the construction and design of a car. One possible solution might be the combination of solid-state materials with a high pressure tank. However, for such kind of combined storage devices, none of the available materials is appropriate under standard conditions. One potential strategy for further research activities could be to focus on materials which are unstable under ambient conditions such as unstable metal hydrides systems. With the implementation of 70 MPa tanks and the corresponding filling stations the infrastructure for hydrogen driven cars is currently defined. Future research on solid-state materials for hydrogen storage has to consider this technical concept. Only materials which can be integrated into the infrastructure based on high pressure storage will have a chance for future applications. However, solid-state hydrogen storage is not only important for transportation. New developments of hydrogen storage materials for electronic devices, emergency power units or for heat storage based on metal hydrides are promising and may play an important role for future energy supply.
