The biojetfuel industry has been transformed in the last 2 years and excellent progress has been made on all fronts, both upstream and downstream. The decision was reached to pursue a 'drop in' fuel, and processes for producing fuel with the required properties were rapidly established and proven. A valid method of certifying these fuels in a timely manner was identified and implemented, and airlines have come forward to express their commitment to purchase the new biojetfuel. In terms of feedstocks, international criteria for sustainable biofuels are being established: a number of distinct sustainable biofuel feedstocks have been identified and are either under development or in production. There is not expected to be one dominant feedstock, but rather, a range of feedstocks depending primarily on location. The economics of biojetfuel indicate that there are a number of feedstocks that can be expected to yield competitive biofuels, including biojetfuels. For many years there was a commonly held view that aviation had no realistic alternative to fossil fuel, in contrast to other forms of transport. Over the last 2 years, aviation has been found to have another credible alternative. How much sustainable biofuel feedstock is produced, and how much of that feedstock is consumed by the aviation industry remains to be seen. However, what is clear nowis that aviation has options and it is moving fast to exploit its new sustainable energy source. A new industry is in the making - but it is too early yet to be sure of the precise form that it will take.
