In view of the upcoming Euro VI and Tier IV emission legislation for commercial vehicles for the respective On-Road and Off-Road applications, different concepts for the arrangement of necessary components inside the complex after treatment systems are evaluated with respect to NOx conversion. As the after treatment systems for On-Road and Off-Road applications necessitate the installation of additional components to fulfil the respective emission limits, the sequence of the components has a crucial influence on the performance of the overall system. The introduction of components to reduce NOx emissions is especially challenging due to the confined space conditions that normally exist. Also, with most injection systems the use of a mixing device is essential to achieve effective urea preparation and an acceptable NOx conversion rate. In this context the positions of the urea dosing system as well as the injection system itself and the mixing section are varied. This includes the set-up of different emission components with respect to their position along the gas flow as well as the possible alignment inside a one-box-design or an in-line configuration. To evaluate the performance of the respective configurations detailed scans of relevant gas concentrations over the cross-section of the SCR monolith(s) under different load conditions are carried out. This includes the variation of raw emissions and the amount of urea injected. Additionally, gas and surface temperatures are monitored. Based on these results a ranking of the different configurations can be established.
