Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are robust to intermittent disruptions and do not require a continuous end-to-end connection to operate. Therefore, DTNs are well suited for sparse vehicular ad-hoc networks, e.g. for vehicle fleets of public transportation systems. In our current project 'Opportunistic Public Transport Communication' (OPTraCom) we implement such a network which can be used for updating passenger information systems and for monitoring control equipment and environmental data. We present these use-cases and introduce the system architecture. Furthermore, we describe the custom hardware that was developed. A special routing algorithm is used for quick and reliable information dissemination. Moreover, we give an overview of IT security requirements and implementations in our system.
