Radar sensors are the key sensor systems for comfort and safety functions in today's cars because of their high measurement performance and their all-weather capability. In general, they measure range, azimuth angle and relative radial velocity of objects within their field of view. These sensors are widely used for front and rear applications but seldomly for side applications. This is due to the opinion that lateral movements, especially the lateral velocity and the heading are difficult to detect with radar sensors. But this is not the case if more than one reflection point is detected by the sensor. This paper shows the performance of an object-tracking with lateral velocity estimation which can be used for side applications.
