The veritable economic boom taking place in the People's Republic of China is placing enormous demands on the development of the transport system, and expanding the railway network is playing a crucial role in this. The capacity of the network is growing fast thanks to the simultaneous upgrading of lines for mixed operations, high-speed lines and stations. In 2008, China adopted a medium- and long-term plan for expanding the high-speed network and the railway network as a whole up to 2020. The aim is to lengthen the railway network to approximately 120000 km and to complete 12000 km for high speeds between 2008 and 2020. The Chinese railway is the first one in the world to have trains running regular services at 350 km/h - moreover in large numbers and over long distances. The author describes the engineering challenges, the permanent way, the construction of tunnels and bridges and the command, control and safety systems.
