Welding is the traditional joining techniques in shipbuilding. An increasing outfitting status will lead to problems due to heat input caused by the welding process as well as damages on paint and varnishes caused by weld spatters. Technical and economical effects of implementing alternative joining technologies should be shown. The effects are discussed reckoning three typical joining alternatives: Mechanical joining, Bonding, Frame channel systems. In this paper three possibilities will be discussed in detail: blind rivet joining, bonding and frame channel system. The alternative assembling methods do offer a significant cost reduction potential. Additional the higher flexibility regarding the time of assembling in the production process and the higher part of primary processing time could improve outfitting processes. The reduction of heat affected deformation and paint damage and therefore a higher production quality due to heat reduced joining techniques have also to be named. Therefore alternative joining techniques has to be integrated in shipbuilding processes to improve productivity.
