Railway infrastructure and therefore railway switches play an important role for rail operations. Switches enable a train to change moving direction without stopping. At the same time maintaining switches is a cost driver for infrastructure managers. The Institute of Transportation Systems, together with the German Railways (DB AG), is therefore analysing ways of how to increase maintenance efficiency of switches. Core of the concept are the condition information gained from diagnostic systems. Based on the condition data, wear-out functions are determined taking into account the switch type (with/ without switch rail rollers etc.), the effective load and environmental parameters. These information are then used for maintenance strategy decisions as well as short term event scheduling. Meaning that when knowing the degradation process of switches dependant on external parameters and the crucial condition values, the developed concept can give advices of long or short term character. On one hand the knowledge can be used to select the most appropriate maintenance strategy, a decision which has to be made in the beginning of the period of system use. On the other hand it can also short-term indicate when scheduled maintenance activities can be left out because of good system condition. Long and short term information can be set in relation to enterprise boundary conditions and are then used by the maintenance management when taking precise maintenance decisions.
