In this paper, the authors have presented a control for the regenerative braking system to implement the brake compensation when a brake fade happens. The ability of brake compensation for the regenerative braking system has been investigated and the uncertainty of the brake torque coefficient has been considered in the design of the regenerative brake control law. A main feature of the presented control method is that the system can estimate the brake torque coefficient with adaptive estimation method. Another important property of the proposed method is that the control can be implemented in the drive motor and does not need additional cost for the braking system. The effect of regenerative braking system for brake compensation has been investigated via simulations. The simulations were performed using a complete longitudinal vehicle model. The results indicate that the proposed regenerative brake control law can provide the hybrid electric bus with optimised comfort. The simulation results can be used as references for the EMS design.
