Short notice given only substantially as follows: The Teijin Group has created an electric concept car that weighs less than half that of conventional electric vehicles. The car, made with proprietary materials and technologies including carbon fibre composites, polycarbonate resins and bio-derived polyester, weighs just 437 kg. Teijin says the car embodies its vision of what a vehicle will look like on the market in five to ten years. Capable of 60 km/hour and a cruising range of 100 km, the concept car is being exhibited in the Teijin Mirai Studio, a showroom located in the same building as Teijin's headquarters in Tokyo. The body of the concept car incorporates a core structure made of carbon fibre composite material, while windows are made of polycarbonate resin with a heat absorbing function, weighing half as much as glass, according to the company. The total amount of parts is reduced to around 20, with modularised parts made with single-piece moulding. Interior items such as the seats and floor mats are made from bio-derived polyester, while metal-toned Teflex PET film is used as an alternative to chrome plating and the reduced noise tyre cord is made with Teonax polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) fibre. The company established the Mobility Business Project, a department overseen directly by the CEO in April 2009, to support business expansion in the automobiles and aircraft sectors, focusing on the development of materials and technologies for lightweight, hybrid and electric vehicle designs.
