The research aims to establish a tyre/road noise model solely based on road surface characteristics. Most models on tyre/road noise estimate the total Sound Pressure Level (SPL) of tyre/road noise. Starting point in this research, however, is to investigate the respective influences on tyre/road noise of relative small changes in the surface mixture properties. Therefore, only mixture parameters are taken into account and not the tyre. The new model is based on Perturbation Theory in Quantum Mechanics. This allows us to investigate the influence of small variations in building materials. It will also give us a more accurate estimation of the nominal acoustical lifetime of silent roads. This is an important issue in contracts between road authorities and contractors. This research is pared to fundamental research on optimising the structural life time of roads and can be combined with existing traditional tyre/road noise models. The model aims to describe the relationship between change of tyre/road noise and variance of influential parameters, including parameters on design level and the road surface characteristics. The model is based on statistics and the noise generation mechanisms and tyre influences are excluded. The regression functions are to be identified through the analysis of the detailed and rational dataset. Measures should be taken to remove the effect of other parameters. A description of certain parameters, such as mechanical impedance and grading, require thorough investigation in the research process.
