The automated handling and the automated assembly of limp flexible parts represent a special challenge to process development. In the field of automobile manufacturing, parts of this kind - in other words, without inherent stiffness - include paint films, cables and also sealing profiles. This paper will describe how an automation project of this kind was successfully implemented. The door seal system of the Mercedes C Class and also of virtually all other Mercedes passenger cars consists of three sealing planes: Compared with previous methods, the automatic application of door weatherstrip with continuous material, integrated cleaning and automatic butt joining offers the following advantages, among others: Reduction in production time (HPV), reduction in production material costs, reduction in plant investment costs, reduced weight (compared to clip rail), no component variants, model and successor flexibility, reproducible quality, high system availability, scalable degree of automation due to modular design. The equipment described is now in service at Daimler in three different plants for two series of vehicles and has been defined as standard for all subsequent series with the corresponding door concept. The product requirements relating to the door weatherstrip and the vehicle door have been defined and are taken into consideration in the development of new products.
