Ramp metering (RM) has been deployed in more than 80 locations on the Highways Agency (HA) motorway network. Evaluation of operational sites shows average journey time reductions of 13% (3). Experience gained during the installation, calibration and operation of the first 30 sites suggested that further benefits could be generated from the ramp metering system by further development of certain aspects of the system algorithms. This paper details the four key proposed algorithm developments and the expected performance improvements as suggested by detailed modelling work (1).
