In order to improve the performance of 16V240ZJB diesel engine, with the method which combine the simulation and the trials on steady flow in inlet, at first solid modeling with three-dimensional modeling software UG, and then the trials supply the boundary conditions for the simulation, we took the AVL-FIRE as a platform, different numerical simulation are applied with appropriate turbulence models and calculation methods, after all the detailed information of flow field are showed with different valve lifts. The results of the parameters (Flow coefficient and Swirl ratio) of the inlet performance which matched well with the trials of steady flow platform, so the possibility of evaluating inlet with numerical simulation methods are proved; after the analysis of flow fields, the unreasonable section of the inlet was found and the methods to improve the inlet were made, the numerical calculation was made again. As shown with the results, the inlet flow was improved obviously after the inlet structure was improved, while the state of the inlet flowing was better.
