The mechanical response of USIBOR 1500P boron steel quenched at rates from 14 to 50 K/s is was examined for this work. Thermocouples were used to measure the temperature vs. time during quenching and when plotted with the CCT diagram, the results indicated that the apparent quenched microstructure varied from predominantly bainite at the lowest cooling rate to full martensite at the highest cooling rate. Dog-bone specimens were then machined from the blanks and pulled in tension at strain rates of 0.003 and 1.0 s-1. The stress vs. strain curves were plotted for the various cooling rates and showed that small changes in cooling rate resulted in significant changes in the strength and hardening response. The energy absorption potential of the specimens was quantified as the toughness. The specimens quenched at 14 and 50 K/s resulted in the same toughness value, but varied significantly in their stress vs. strain response. Strain rate sensitivity was also shown for all of the cooling rates tested.
