The automotive sector remains an important customer for the nonwovens industry and any technology development from the auto sector will be of great benefit for the nonwovens industry. A recent presentation of GM Research and Development presents an optimistic scenario for Indian industry. Automotive industry is poised for changes both in terms of new markets and new technologies, which can be advantageous to Indian industry. Rapid growth will be in 11 emerging markets and the technological development in the automotive sector will drive this industry in developed economies. Given the general rule that on an average 20 square yards of nonwoven fabrics are used in every automobile, the growth forecast and the advancement in technologies are positive news for the nonwovens and technical textiles sector. The global automotive industry which currently has 820 million vehicles will grow to over 1 billion vehicles by 2020, 70 % of the growth will be in 11 emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Arica, Poland, Turkey, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Mexico). Besides the market growth sustainability issues will demand lighter and highly fuel efficient vehicles with increased opportunities for nonwovens and lighter composites. Infrastructure investments will drive the nonwovens industry and technical textiles and geo-textiles markets. Industry reports estimate the growth of the nonwovens sector in the US and Europe to be around 5 to 6 %, in India around 11 to 13 % and in China around 15 %. Nonwoven applications in battery separators, energy savings and sustainability have to be seriously looked into as they are the wave of the future.
