The present work uses a circular plate modeling railway wheels to explore the ways for reducing the vibration and sound radiation levels of the railway wheels through its structure optimization. The circular plate is affixed with constrained damping blocks. On the circular plate, the grooves are configurated with the circular plate and the damping blocks. Such a damped circular plate has the axisymmetric distributions of the grooves and damping blocks on it. It is used to model the damped wheel simplified, which will be taken into consideration in the future work. Based on a hybrid FEM-BEM method, the paper puts forward a vibro-acoustic radiation model for the damped circular plate to investigate its vibration and acoustic radiation characteristics. In the procedure, the dynamic response of the damped circular plate in frequency range is obtained by the 3D finite element modal based on mode superposition method, which considers the effect that the different distributions of constrained damping blocks have on the response, and also the effect which the structural modal loss factor has. Then, the mobility of the damped circular plate is used as the boundary condition for the acoustic boundary element model that is numerically implemented in the commercial code SYSNOISE. In order to attempt to find the best effect of vibration and noise reduction, the procedure uses the vibration characteristic of the circular plate or the mode characteristics designs the distributions of the circular and radial grooves on the plate. The numerical analysis makes the comparisons between the acoustic radiations of the damped circular plate with different groove distributions. The work ends with a low-noise circular plate designed with damping grooves. The present analysis provides a new way for controlling railway wheel noise level, and a reference for the design of low-noise wheel.
