CPX (close proximity) is one of the methods used to evaluate tire/road noise of car tires and the pavement influence on noise. In order to ascertain high quality road measurements results, it is necessary to establish certification procedures for the test equipment, most notably the test vehicles. The paper covers the specific certification procedures developed by WG 33 (working group 33) of ISO/TC 43/SC 1 (International Organization for Standardization/technical committee 43/subcommittee 1) and within the European project 'SILVIA' (Sustainable Road Surfaces for Traffic Noise Control). The most important issues of the certification process are related to estimation of background noise levels and acoustical reflections. There are numerous designs of CPX test vehicles and different resources are available for their designers and users, so it is not practical to develop universal test procedures that could be applied to any test vehicle. It is better to apply different approaches for different constructions. The paper summarises recommended test methods, shows their advantages and shortcomings and gives examples of results based on certification of the Tiresonic trailers that are built and used at The Technical University of Gdansk, Poland.
