Distribution of stress at the footprint of tyres decides their behavior under various road conditions and the performance of a particular tyre design. Hence mapping of stress at the tread footprint and analysis have great importance to the tyre industry and road safety. Since the footprint of a tyre is hidden in between the tyre and the ground, it is difficult to do the stress mapping. A holographic method was introduced to map the stress at the footprint of tyres and this was tested with an actual tyre footprint and its sidewalls. The results show that the method introduced and the developed system can be effectively used for high sensitive stress mapping of car tyres, evaluation of stress of car tyres made of different materials and with different tread patterns. It also helps to assess how the footprint stress transfer to the sidewalls and its dynamics under various pressures and tread designs. A set of similar experiments was done on a radial tyre with different tread type and the fringes (Fig.5) obtained. The stress distribution was entirely different from the first tyre. These results helped us to effectively conclude about the efficacy of the proposed method to evaluate stress at the footprints of real vehicle tyres. Further work on application of the method in non-destructive evaluation of car tyres with various tread patterns and comparison of these results with computer simulated stress patterns are progressing.
