The powertrain control system is becoming more sophisticated and complicated as a response to ever-increasing market requirements such as stricter emission regulations. As a consequence of this trend, required resources for the control system development are growing rapidly, and a development process now undergoes more iterations and reworks than ever before. In order to remain competitive in the market, a new way of the control system development to fundamentally streamline the development process is therefore much needed, and Model-Based Development (MBD) is considered as an effective solution. As presented in the 2005.s Aachen Colloquium, Toyota has been developing a MBD environment to realize the concurrent development of hardware and software, rapid plant modeling, integration of physical and statistical modeling techniques, hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system, and so on. In this paper, after a brief introduction of the MBD and concurrent development, we will present several important model-based projects at Toyota, aiming to revolutionize the engine development process. First, we will present a simulation system for fuel consumption estimation used at an early planning phase, which allows us to evaluate the effects of not only hardware designs but also control strategy designs. Second, we will present an activity to reorganize the existing control software code to allow clean implementation of physical models and/or statistical models, as well as to allow effective and efficient verification and validation (V&V) of a very large set of control algorithms. Third, we will present an attempt to extend the HILS system for more demanding and critical V&V purpose. Fourth, we will present another attempt to exploit the Model-Based Calibration (MBC) method in the transient emission calibration to meet the tightening emission regulations in a robust and well-formalized manner.
