A safety optimum for accidents should be considered from the beginning of the development of a new vehicle not only at an individual but also on a social level. Fleet compatibility can only be achieved, if all vehicles are compatible across the whole relevant fleet rather than to a certain crash partner. The work presented here intends to develop a methodology to really measure fleet compatibility and to develop a fleet compatible car. For that purpose, the frontal stiffness distribution of the subject car was optimized for a defined traffic accident environment model. By using a variety of crash configurations, the accident environment model can approximately represent the complex real traffic accident situations. The fleet is built using a number of different sized cars, each represented by a suitably simplified FE model. Using this approach, the fleet compatibility of the subject car can be measured and optimized. A car of the C-segment was chosen to undertake the role of the subject car (car in question) to demonstrate how the concept functions. The results of the optimization show that a small reduction in the frontal stiffness of the subject car can reduce the overall crash severity by about 12 %. This demonstrates that the subject car, which is of recent design, already is quite well optimised for compatibility. But there is still some potential to improve without changing the concept of the subject car fundamentally. If the proposed methodology is applied during the development of every new vehicle, further improvements in compatibility for the whole fleet are expected.
