Search for safety and high efficiency is the driving force in the aerospace industry. This paper reports on application of a relatively new and very promising evolutionary algorithm SOMA (self-organizing migrating algorithm) with the intent to answer the question on optimal wing geometry. In the first part the authors describe the SOMA algorithm, its principle and configuration options. The second half is devoted to aerodynamic model of the wing, the optimisation process and results they obtained. They present a modern, high performance global optimisation algorithm, following with real engineering application results represented by set of evolutionary-designed wings which they developed in cooperation with a leading civil aircraft design bureau and manufacturer.
