The paper describes a new structure of a wind and wave power plant with two groups of electrical machine: multipole axial flux and linear tubular PMSGs (permanent-magnet synchronous generators). Both types of generators are installed on the common platform extended along an offshore area. A few important issues are reported including the plant power converter topologies for interconnection between generators and interfacing a grid, identification of generators parameters and aspects of design optimisation problems. Variable speed operation of both type generators avoids the necessity of their output values synchronisation and provides the underwater HVDC electrical energy transmission to a cost power converter substation. A block-scheme of the proposed plant with combined utilization of wind and sea wave power is described and analyzed. Distinguished features of the plant are: the increase of power equipment concentration on areas available at offshores, unification of the electrical generators and power electronic converters, simplification of maintenances, etc. It was verified that the multipole PM synchronous generators have advantages before the conventional ones due to higher performances, except cost effective factor. At the same time the wide variety of their constructions hinders process of optimization. Suggested two-stage method of sequential application of system and parametric optimizations allows to overcome the multivariable and multiobjective problem. With the express method, the axial type configuration (APMSG) was selected among the other designs and the FEM based refining optimization has minimized the PM width at the rated value of torque. Torque density of PMSG depends mainly on two design parameters: the number of poles p and the sizing coefficient n (torque radius ratio). At p > 8 and n = 1 the APMSG have the higher torque density compared with short length radial flux PMSG (RPMSG) and at p > 20 the torque density is doubled. The procedure of parameter identification of conventional synchronous machines (SM) does not fit for unconventional PMSMs, demanding more complicated approach, especially in case of reciprocating linear PMSGs.
