Besides changes in the engine hardware, the new emission regulations require control strategies to gain the full potential for emission reduction and fuel economy, especially under transient conditions. Control strategies for engines with multiple sources of EGR, such as high and low pressure, have been developed and are in or near production. Next generation engines require these basic approaches be extended to take advantage of the capabilities offered by these advanced air systems. Within this approach, advanced sensing technologies using cylinder pressure monitoring procedures can provide additional advantages. This paper presents a number of the practical challenges encountered when attempting to do this control system optimization as well as proposed solutions. Engine test results showing the net improvements to fuel economy, emissions and transient response when using these techniques are discussed. First Generation controller strategies discussed are: Boost Control, Model based PID, utilizing HP-EGR for closed loop control, switching between using all HP-EGR or all LP-EGR depending on operating conditions, switched feedback paths.Opportunities for Improvement for Generation two fall into four general categories: 1. Smart EGR components. 2. Improved EGR Estimation Techniques (static and dynamic). 3. Base Controller Structure Improvements. 4. Sensor Elimination.
