This article describes the development of an intelligentsystem for railway risk analysis using FRA (fuzzy reasoning approach) and Fuzzy-AHP (analytical hierarchy decision making process), which is specially designedand developed for the railways. In the system, FRA isemployed to estimate the RL (risk level) of each failure eventin terms of FP (failure probability) and CS (consequent severity). This allows imprecision or approximate information inrisk analysis process. Fuzzy-AHP technique is incorporatedinto the risk model to use its advantage in determining there relative importance of the risk contributors, in essence WF (weight factor) so that the risk assessment can be progressed fromcomponent level to the subsystem level and finally to systemlevel. This risk assessment system can evaluate bothqualitative and quantitative risk data and informationassociated with a railway system efficiently and effectively, which will provide railway risk analysts, managers andengineers with a method and tool to improve their safetymanagement of railway systems and set safety standards. Acase study on rolling stock asset risk analysis is used toillustrate the application of the intelligent system.
