In hybrid powertrains, oscillations due to load and mode changes are a common discomfort for car passengers. Control systems need to dampen occuring oscillations without slashing the overall vehicle dynamics. To design and to develop appropriate control algorithms in an early development stage, exact simulation models are crucial. This paper presents a cylinder-individual diesel engine model based on thermodynamic equations and a nonlinear powertrain model with backlash in the Dymola environment. This allows the analyses and simulation of oscillations due to the engine's torque irregularity and the nonlinear behavior of the powertrain. As an example in simulation, a combustion engine is started while the vehicle drives in the electrical mode. During the clutch synchronization phase, the results show the decreasing electrical motor speed, the decrease of the vehicle speed and the following oscillations due to the eigenfrequencies of the powertrain components. The dynamic analyses and simulation results will help in a later step to design comfort systems counteracting the oscillations.
