The European funded project HOPE was executed from 01.01.06 until 31.12.08. HOPE stands for High Density Power Electronics for FC- and ICE-Hybrid Electric Vehicle Powertrain. For high density power electronics there is a need for very effective cooling. Especially when liquid cooling is not available. There are some places in a car without connection to the cooling circuit. In this project a lot of work was carried out to build up power electronics building blocks (PEBB) with heat pipes and natural convection. The focus was to demonstrate the operability within the automotive temperature range between -40 Cel and +150 Cel. SiC devices were used for producing the heat. The results show PEBB with a rated power of several kW can be operated within the automotive temperature range without any liquid cooling due to the application of modified heat pipes.
