A model-based combustion prediction controller was developed to carry out control operation while predicting ignition based on the physical condition inside the cylinder. The following results were obtained: (1) Because the three control elements of turbo-charging, EGR, and combustion have differing response speeds, by compensating for slow response elements with fast response control elements, a control system was structured wherein the control error over the transient physical condition inside the cylinder can be kept to a minimum. (2) By controlling the intake gas O2 fraction, which is the physical condition governing NOx, through appropriate manipulation of the highly responsive EGR to compensate for the response delay of turbocharging, transient NOx can be controlled. (3) By predicting and controlling the ignition period through observation of the physical condition inside the cylinder, misfire during changes in driving conditions can be prevented in advance, and the torque response as well as any increase in emissions can be controlled.
