A number of conclusions could be offered as a result of the conducted testing and evaluation of the data: 1. The structural and optical properties of films protected with quartz glass underwent insignificant changes. 2. For unprotected films substantial changes in thickness, mass, density and optical properties were observed. 3. A comparison between properties of initial polymer materials and their characteristics after open space exposure for 28 and 42 months showed that the rates of surface properties changes depend nonlinearly upon exposure period. This may be associated both with accumulating changes of composition and structure of polymer surface layer and, probably, the solar activity increase, observed after first 28 months of sample exposure in the outer space. 4. The polymer film resistance to the influence of the space environmental factors depended substantially on the chemical structure and composition of the polymer. Polyimide films underwent more serious changes than fluoropolymer ones. So, for example, mass loss for polyimide films is almost 10 times greater than for fluoropolymers. Moreover, mass of F4-MB film increased, with the increase, during last 14 months of exposure, amounting to about 20%. Back-aluminized polyimide films were the least durable, up to a total loss of integrity after 42 months of exposure, i.e. metallization of polyimide films leads to a substantial acceleration of their destruction. 5. The obtained in this work results will help improving the forecasting of the polymer material durability under space conditions and the evaluation of methods of their protection with various coatings.
