Many software or hardware components developed in R&D activities reach with difficulty the needed maturity level for use in space projects. This is due to lack of a representative environment where validation and technology demonstration can be properly performed. The RASTA (Reference Avionics System Test-bench Activity) aims to help filling this gap by providing a hardware and software infrastructure that can be used to integrate developments resulting from TRP and GSTP activities. RASTA is based on the Compact PCI (cPCI) bus. Each board conforms to the cPCI standard and allows for simple integration in standard cPCI crates. The baseline communication between boards is performed via the PCI interface in the backplane. For other types of communication protocols, such as SpaceWire and Mil-Std-1553B, appropriate connectors are provided on the front-panel of each interface board. To accelerate the development of application software, device drivers have been developed for the RTEMS realtime operating system, covering all processors and communication protocols implemented by the RASTA development platform. RASTA incorpotates flight compatible hardware and software. This is supplemented by the addition of a PC workstation hosting the cross-development and debugging environment. The two together provide an 'easy to use' facility that allows developers to perform tests and validation, at system level, in a highly representative way. The RASTA initiative provides: A rich set of hardware ready for integration; A rich set of IP cores ready for integration; A platform to which new hardware element can be added easily; Ready-made RTEMS drivers for all hardware elements; A complete layered software environment; Full support for LEON3/LEON2 processors.
