A new mathematical model of axial vibration was constructed by simplifying the crankshaft to a continuous stepped shaft model and formulating kinetic formulae of shafts and masses. Applying a vector matrix, a single order or a whole system vibration can be analysed. Using a new testing device, vibrations at the free-end of the engine shaft were measured and compared with the calculation result. There was good agreement between the calculated and measured results of the resonant axial frequency, but there are some errors of axial amplitudes between the calculated and measured results.
