This paper gives an overview on some approaches to include a fuel cell based auxiliary power unit into an automobile. An auxiliary power unit (APU) could support the vehicle electrical system if consumption exceeds available power. System design has been studied based on an energy balance. Therefore measurements of electrical loads in vehicles, of batteries and double layer capacitors have been performed, which serve for modelling of the components of the vehicle electrical system. From the energy balance, current ratings of the power electronic converters were calculated for different driving cycles and load scenarios.
