The mode of operation of a phased-array facility for the US testing of aircraft plates made of aluminium alloys is presented. All the necessary steps required for calibration and approval, are discussed. The phased array technique is based on the same physical fundamentals as a conventional system. Because of the higher number of elements / virtual probes, more effort, surveys and verification checks are necessary to guarantee correct testing. The phased-array technique is not yet covered by current specifications for US-testing, but meets all requirements of these standards. The use of these Systems is becoming more and more accepted and offers a range of benefits for the US-testing of aluminium plates and also of other applications. The probe can be adjusted relatively easily to the tasks of the tests. At the same accuracy, the testing speed is considerably higher than in conventional Systems.
