A study of evaluation methods is given based on availability for railway signalling systems. It is described an evaluation method to calculate the effectiveness of various measures to improve the availability of the whole system based on the restarting time for railway signalling systems, and calculate these values from recorded failure data of current equipment. Moreover in a case study using the proposed methods, it is shown the expected restarting time, the number of canceled trains and the number of affected passengers, when equipment is installed in a new station and its failure occurs.
