New alloys, advances in processing development and new applications since the last International Titanium Conference in 2003 will be discussed with regard to airframe structures. There have been significant developments in the aircraft industry driven by the new aircraft such as the Airbus A-380 and Boeing 787 commercial aircraft and the Boeing C-17 and Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35 military aircraft; these and others will be discussed. With regard to alloy development, subjects for discussion include Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr, more machinable alloys, and metal matrix composites with continuous and discontinuous reinforcement. In terms of processing, item such as welding, direct metal deposition or metal additive manufacturing, machining, superplastic forming, and Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr forging will be covered. Post-fabrication issues are also key to the successful utilization of titanium and progress in these areas will also described.
