An acoustic measurement system uses a pitch catch measurement to evaluate the integrity of the internal surface of a pipe. Applications for this measurement system are the inspection of pipelines and bore holes. An ultrasonic pulse is generated by a transducer. The transducer is separated from the, often hostile, environment inside the pipe by an acoustic window, being part of the system's casing. The object of this study is the optimization of the shape and orientation of the acoustic window in order to reduce the disturbance of the measurement system. By means of simulations of the A-Scans and the wave field propagation, window design variations can be evaluated in an efficient way. The simulations have been carried out with UMASIS (Ultrasonic Modeling and Analysis), developed by TNO Science & Industry. UMASIS calculates a solution to the full 2D elastic wave equation by means of Finite Differences. All wave phenomena possibly occurring, such as reflections, diffractions, refractions and mode conversions are taken into account. The simulation results are presented as an animation of the wave field propagation and the amplitude of the signal measured by the ultrasonic transducer.
