Transparent conductive thin film coatings on polymer substrate suitable as heating coating of diffuser panels in automotive headlights have been prepared consisting of a thin Ag layer stacked between two dielectric layers. AZO (ZnO:Al), TiO2 and ITO have been used as dielectric materials. The AZO based stacks showed lowest sheet resistances. Thus, the Ag layer has been lowest in combination with AZO dielectric layers compared to TiO2 and ITO based layer stacks in order to get 8 Ohm sq. sheet resistance of the coating. However, single AZO layers showed higher surface roughness from AFM surface scans compared to TiO2 layers. Since the resistance of the complete stack depends from the resistivity of all single layers, the lower resistivity of AZO compensated the expected loss due to the higher surface roughness compared to TiO2. All layers meet the optical requirements. Internal transmittance in the wavelength region from 500 nm to 700 nm is about 95 % with color index close to the white point. Further investigations will focus on the optimization of the durability of the transparent heating coating under environmental conditions specific to the application in automotive headlights. Last but not least, the adhesion and electrical contacting of the coating have to be investigated and optimized in order to complete the development of a marketable solution of a heating coating to be used on diffuser panels of automotive LED headlights.
