The raw materials for tyres when the pneumatic tyre was first developed were natural rubber and white filler. Tyre performance then evolved in response to environmental problems and higher vehicle performance, adding advanced running safety and rolling resistance to endurance. In a historical context, the development of petroleum-derived materials such as carbon black, synthetic rubber and synthetic fibre has made a major contribution to advances in tyre technology. The authors therefore looked back through the history of tyres and history of synthetic rubber and studied the technology required. At the same time, inorganic fillers, vegetable oils, and modifications of natural rubber were investigated as non-petroleum materials. The authors present here an outline of the investigation, the improvements in rolling resistance and braking performance on wet road surfaces achieved with recipes using silica, vegetable oil and epoxidised natural rubber, and the product developed from these findings. The authors hence succeeded in developing a practical car tyre that had grip performance and endurance comparable with those of conventional tyres, butwhich also had reduced rolling resistance and noise. The consequences are two-fold: 1. Increase in the proportion of non-petroleum materials from 44% to 70% reduces the consumption of petroleum as feedstock. 2. Compared with the company's conventional tyres, the 30% reduction in rolling resistance without loss of grip performance on wet roads cuts on-road fuel consumption.
