The introduction of hybrid-electric and battery-electric vehicles in suitable market segments represent therefore an important step towards decreasing the dependence on imported petroleum and improving the overall energy efficiency of the transportation sector. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of electric traction systems for automotive propulsion. The paper begins with a brief overview of current issues related to transportation fuels and to energy use in vehicular transportation. Next, the principal classes of electric traction systems are reviewed, and their performance and efficiency characteristics are reviewed. Finally, some considerations are made concerning the matching of specific traction systems to a given vehicle application.
